Exhibition 25 YEARS OF THE MUSEUM OF THE PEOPLE
09.02.2021 - 09.05.2021
10:00 O'Clock
From collecting to mediating From amazement to recognition From other to one's own
Museums are places of remembrance culture - and they are - based on princely art and curiosity chambers or other collections - an initially European "invention". They keep things from being forgotten. These things are material carriers of cultural memory - they become symbols and testimony to it. Museums make these testimonies accessible, but they also strongly shape our view - in ethnographic museums the view of the "others", of social phenomena or cultural and ritual activities. Based on the writing of the “other”, based on amazement, other questions arise today: What do collectibles tell us today? For whom and why are they important? Where do exhibits come from?
In the new exhibition "25 Years of the Museum of the Peoples", the history of the Museum of the Peoples makes the emergence of a museum visible - from the establishment of an exhibition room for originally purely private collections and exhibitions to an institution that addresses current issues of the 21st century and thus consciously addresses a broad, increasingly young and diverse audience.
