Schwazer Knappensteig
Hiking & mountain tour
A journey through the mining industry of Schwaz.
You are now in the Falkenstein mining district – a place where impressive mining history has been written over centuries. Between 1400 and 1957, ore was mined in more than 250 tunnels up to 1,600 metres above sea level and around 200 metres below the floor of the Inn Valley. From these, the miners extracted valuable metals such as copper and silver. In total, the tunnels in this area stretch for an incredible 500 kilometres – a tremendous testament to human endurance and craftsmanship. With the newly designed Schwazer Knappensteig trail, you now have the unique opportunity to discover this fascinating mining world right at its original locations. Step by step, you hike through history and get a vivid sense of the extraordinary achievements that were once accomplished here with pure human power – in the midst of the impressive mountain landscape around Schwaz.
