Literaturforum Schwaz: Birgit Birnbacher reads from "They want to tell us"
After 'Wovon wir leben', Bachmann Prize winner Birgit Birnbacher's new novel is a sensitive and literary account of dealing with neurodiversity
From the Buch:
Oz is different and has a hard time at school, but this time something really stupid has happened to him. So on the way home, he wishes for at least a little disaster to distract his mom from the letter he has to give her from the teacher. When Oz gets home, Ann - also equipped with a shimmering nervous system - is not in a celebratory mood as expected, but something has actually happened. Zilly's grandma, who lives in the mountains, has gone.
In her new novel, Birgit Birnbacher tells a story about people and the opportunities opened up by wild growth in thinking that is both subtle and crystal clear, translucent and subtle (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Do those who are unable to adapt really have something to counter our overstimulated nature and environment?
