The Schwazer Stadtschreiber 2025, Mario Schemmerl, reads from his novel project 'Sonnenhof' (working title)
With an excerpt from the novel project Sonnenhof, which he would also like to work on in Schwaz, Mario Schemmerl applied for the Schwazer Stadtschreiber scholarship and was chosen by the jury of the Literature Forum from exactly 130 applications as this year's Schwazer Stadtschreiber.
Schemmerl's novel tells an intense and unembellished story of everyday life in the fictitious Sonnenhof care facility: of maintaining human dignity and the overburdening of carers, for whom there is no psychological support. About wanting to break out and stop, but also about the beautiful experiences that encourage people to carry on, but which take a back seat to the physical and psychological strain.
Mario Schemmerl, *1987 in Graz, has been working in the care sector since 2009. He has published texts in magazines and anthologies. In 2023, he was a finalist at the 31st open mike in Berlin and shortlisted for the FM4 Wortlaut. In 2024, he was awarded the City of Graz Prize for Literature.
