Literaturforum Schwaz: Reading with Margit Weiß
The author Margit Weiß reads from her novel 'Maddalena geht' (Edition Raetia 2024)
Maddalena lives as a midwife in Buchenstein, a remote Ladin mountain valley, around 1900. She has plenty of work: in the poor farming families who strictly believe in God, it is not uncommon to have ten or more children. After giving birth, Maddalena decides to break out of the confines of her life. She sets off on foot across the Dolomites to the north and confronts truths that she had previously avoided. On the way, Maddalena repeatedly looks back on her first journey, which took her to Innsbruck as a 19-year-old to study midwifery and into a secret love story. With Maddalena geht, Margit Weiß presents a feminist historical novel based on the life story of her great-grandmother. It is also a story of transalpine migration.
Margit Weiß, *1963 in Kufstein, psychotherapist and author. Her mother's side of the family comes from the Ladin village of Buchenstein. Maddalena geht is her debut novel, followed in 2025 by 'Was man nicht sieht, ist doch da' about the history of orphans in Tyrol.
