KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ, OPENING CONCERT 2025

11.09.2025
20:00 O'Clock

Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck with works by Bernhard Gander, Manuel Zwerger, Francisco Alvarado, Oxana Omelchuk

What kind of relationship do we have with technology? Are we curious or intimidated? Nostalgic or ready for a new beginning? The opening concert of Klangspuren 2025 explores the festival theme from four very different angles. Before the Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck takes to the stage, a network of brass instruments is placed on the stage. The framework of trumpets, flugelhorn and trombones is played by a digitally controlled compressed air machine. Bernhard Gander knows Jakob Scheid's trumpet tree well and has written a short composition for it. The South Tyrolean Manuel Zwerger also combines sounding brass and modern technology: He prepares the slide of a bass trombone with a camera and builds an augmented reality world through which trombonist Jakob Grimm navigates while playing and into which the audience can literally immerse themselves on a two-channel video: Tiefenrausch is the name of the world premiere.

Oxana Omelchuk is in turn interested in one of the earliest instruments powered by electricity, the theremin, and above all in its inventor: Lev Termen. She uses audio fragments from his last interview. In it, Termen talks about his research into immortality, which led him into the microstructure of time. Termen's voice and the theremin sounds of soloist Khadijah Pamelia Stickney float into the orchestra's sound space and play musically with presence and memory, with reality and illusion. Francisco Alvarado remembers his childhood: his composition REW - PLAY - FFWD draws on the sounds of magnetic tapes, audio and VHS cassettes. The accelerations during rewinding, the smearing noises when pressing the play button, the wear and tear artifacts of a frequently played cassette, plus noise, loops and unpredictable defects, slither through the orchestra, which organically intertwines with them like a derailed tape.
