On the Via Mala, the violent, alcoholic Jonas Lauretz runs a sawmill and mercilessly bullies his wife and child. When he is sent to prison for his violent behavior, the family hopes for better times. But then Jonas Lauretz is released again. His own son and his sister look for a way to get rid of their father.
