Ulla Lohmann "Adventure Volcano"
Journey to the center of the earth
Photojournalist, documentary filmmaker and qualified environmental manager Ulla Lohmann is a passionate adventurer with a pronounced fascination for volcanoes. She was the first woman to descend into one of the largest active craters, Benbow in the South Pacific - more than once. In her multivision show, Lohmann tells of her research trips and her personal dreams, setbacks and successes with breathtaking images and videos. The viewer is whisked away along the Pacific Fire Belt into the world of volcanoes, their formation, their exploration and their significance.
Over 30 years ago, as an eight-year-old, Ulla Lohmann visited a volcano for the first time on vacation with her parents. The view of Vesuvius awakened a deep longing in her. When she also saw the remains of the city of Pompeii, which had once been buried by lava, it was clear to her that she wanted to become a volcano researcher. Ostracized at school and full of guilt after her father's suicide, she experiences her youth as an outsider. Then she stumbles across an archaeological find and wins the national competition "Jugend forscht" with her reconstruction of an amphibian skeleton. With the prize money, the high school graduate finances a one-and-a-half-year trip around the world - and becomes a researcher and journalist. In the South Sea state of Vanuatu, Ulla Lohmann finally looked into the active crater of Benbow, the world's largest producer of volcanic gases, for the first time. "Ever since I saw this volcano for the first time, I only wanted one thing: to climb deep inside it to get as close as possible to the bubbling lava lake to explore it in detail." As extreme as this dream seems, Lohmann actually put it into practice. Ten years after making this decision, she descends into Benbow Crater for the first time.Ulla Lohmann not only takes the audience along on her courageous and important research trip to survey the Benbow, she also shares her life story. On one of her adventure trips, she met her current husband Basti Hofmann, who specializes in controlling camera drones - and proposed to her on the edge of "her" volcano. The inspiring story of a woman who will not be dissuaded from her dreams.
