Actually, Brigitte Wilfing would have much rather written TANZ about the work: If it had been a work for a dance festival, I would have too, because then I know that even a small shift or deconstruction of a musical gesture can be read as dance.
But Growing Sideways was originally a work for Wien Modern, a choreographic composition in recidivist behavioral patterns. In their work, the choreographer and composer Jorge Sánchez-Chiong merge sound with the movement through which it is produced. There is always a choreographic dispositive at the beginning, sometimes the musicians lie on the floor as in Land of the Flats, sometimes they stand on one leg or play with their heads turned to the side as in growing sideways. Looking over your shoulder is our new normal, says Brigitte Wilfing in an interview. What does this gaze do to me, to my movement and orientation? On the contrary: the different bodies, with their individual experiences and characteristics, show what the view to the side can open up, but also what it can restrict: every performer with their background should really be emphasized, says Wilfing, that is very important to me choreographically.
