The double bassist's solo recital reflects his multifaceted artistic activity and identity as a musician, improviser and

Born in Tyrol in 1981, Matthias Pichler began trumpet lessons at the age of six and studied double bass at the Tyrolean State Conservatory and the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz from a young age. During his stays in New York, he worked with and took lessons from bassists such as John Patitucci, Marc Johnson and Larry Grenadier. In 2014 and 2015, he was a finalist for the New German Jazz Prize together with his twin brother Andreas and has long been considered one of the most sought-after bassists in Europe. In addition to his work as a soloist and musician in various ensembles and combos, he teaches at the JIB/Jazz Institut Berlin. His Crown Heights: Songs for double bass solo tell a lot about his connection to this instrument, the common history and the different musical paths and genres in which the double bass is at home. In the attic of the listed Maria Himmelfahrt parish church, the interpretation of the double bass songs takes on a special intimacy, not to mention the impressive architecture of the roof truss and the centuries of history inscribed in it.
