Mathoi-Haus
Museum & exhibition

We create history and are the memory of the city of Schwaz, which we build, preserve, secure and present.

Built around 1500, the ensemble of houses was rebuilt in several phases until the 19th century to its current appearance. After extensive restoration, it now houses the Centre for History and Culture of the Silver City of Schwaz. The installation at this location became possible because the municipality of Schwaz received the Mathoi House together with the annex and garden as a donation from Irmgard Mayr.

The "Irmgard" hall was named after the founder. Paintings by the painters August J. Wagner are presented in the "Wagner" event room.

City Archive

At the centre of the city archive is the preservation, evaluation, indexing and preservation of culturally and historically relevant documents and their collections. Its core tasks also include researching important topics in the history of the city and its inhabitants and presenting them through lectures, exhibitions and publications.

The prerequisite for this is the creation of a systematic overview of all media, their gradual digitisation and the ongoing expansion of the holdings.

In the Mathoi House, the archival material collected and handed down over generations of chroniclers and archivists finds a new home in its own municipal institution created for this purpose.

City Chronicle

Chronicle work means collecting, archiving and documenting current events of public life in the municipality. In this way, chroniclers create and open up sources that should reflect the social development of urban communities in all aspects.

The aim of the city chronicle is to document events and events in the city of Schwaz chronologically and as completely as possible, thus creating new sources for the city archive and the public.
